I have been away from most on-line communities recently due to personal issues and was just wondering how everyone was doing lately.

Only thing that has not been too well, is having problems finding testers and aftr we got the hosting to host PhoenixOS not too many people downloading it

I have been doing OK. My wife's treatment is doing well her tumors have shrunk so we are very happy about that. I have been dealing with the children and their issues for the most part with both their mother and grandfather diagnosed with cancer at pretty much the same time we have seen some behavior problems, it is understandable under the circumstances. The new job has been going well I am a Linux/Unix systems administrator now and I am really enjoying getting paid for doing what I love.

I tried the Karmic based Phoenix and while I enjoyed it I had a few issues when I would do a sudo su I noticed most of the KDE3 applications were not in the path so you had to do use the full path. The structure for new users was a little strange as a good portion of the customizations didn't seem to carry over to any new users. I just copied the default user to /etc/skel and then recreated the new users. I also noticed no matter what I did my wireless would not auto connect on start up I could right click it and say connect and it would work so not sure what the issue with that is. I didn't end up keeping it as Karmic does not see my sound card. I started having issues with my laptop so having just gotten a tax return back I bought a Compaq cq61-420us it is decent enough for what I do not super fast but faster than what I had ( it was cheap though got it on sale for $400 with full warranty ) and most of the older distros have issues with either the wireless, sound card, or both. I am currently running Lucid on it but I am not 100% happy with that I am still looking for other solutions.

How is the new store working out for you? I hope you are busy.

I have copy & pasted all your comments above and added to bug report. The next release will fix problems that you mentioned and I just happen to have that laptop in stock here, so I will PERSONALLY test it on that laptop and make sure it works with wireless/sound/video flawlessly.

New store is working out great, only problem we have is no air conditioning. In FL thats kind of a necessity. We purchased one portable ac, just need one more then it should be cool here.

I found this online but haven't had a chance to reinstall to try it for the sound. Tried it live with no results. I will try in the next few days to see if this works on install or not. Forget about wireless I figured out it was my own fault for not clicking through every screen auto connect is on the last screen.

Ok Good news and bad news.

Bad news is didn't work here either and this is the same laptop you have. Good news is the new version of PhoenixOS (which codename hasnt been appointed yet) works has sound working! So for an alpha off to a good start. This version is a different base, will make an announcement soon.

Good to know I am assuming you are basing it on Lucid which does indeed work on this box. I have noticed Kubuntu to be a bit pickier about the video on this system vs Ubuntu which I find odd as they use the same base. I haven't tried any of the others like Xubuntu. When I tried Debian on this system I noticed sound was very scratchy I didn't really look into it as Lucid, Mandriva, and PCLinuxOS all had sound out of the box. Karmic works very well except the sound. Well I am currently using Phoenix Karmic and will look forward to the next release. If you need help testing I am more than willing. Of course since you have the same machine you can test a lot quicker in house but I could do QA type testing rather than hardware based.

Just got an email from my youngest (in Germany). One of the projects discussed is a solar AC unit, fairly well suited for retail store use because the AC wouldn't be needed (as much) at night, when the store is normally closed.

OK here is a twist under Phoenix Karmic I do indeed get sound but only from the head phones it is almost like it thinks the head phones are always plugged in. Under Lucid I get sound as normal so this must be a driver thing that is fixed in software. I tried upgrading ALSA manually but that didn’t seem to help so I am not sure where to go with this from here. I figured I would post just in case anyone else had the same system and were wondering what to do. At least now I can plug a headset in and listen to my music not a perfect solution but usable.

I plan on trying various flavors of Linux on my rack system, but for my video editing, I will be using Adobe Premier and Windows 7 Ultimate... Shocking, I know, but you need to use the right tool for the job. If anyone knows of a better way using some Linux video editing program, let me know. I will try it out on one of my racks that I am going to use for Linux.

Most of the parts are going to show up in the next few days... I can't wait to start building my new system.

I plan to test Phoenix, Ubuntu, Fedora, and probably several others... I have gotten kinda fond of Ubuntu due to it's constant updating and stability. I even screwed up the dist upgrade by stopping it too early (my bad... my fault entirely***) and I was still able to recover using dpkg and booting to the command line a few times to make some adjustments... long story short... 10.04 installed and working GREAT with nary any data loss...

Saw your post and thought I'd do a little experiment as I only have sound for skype and the computer signals. I booted into the Stealth (karmic) Phoenix and tested a CD with speakers and headphones. The computer recognized an audio CD and I tried to open it with Amorak. Amorak failed to play it although there was some movement on the visual display. That was with both speakers or phones. I thought it might be my CDram/rom, so I rebooted back into Flamehawk (Hardy) and did the same experiment and Amorak loaded the disc immediately, listing the tracks and played with no problems. I know this does not answer your problem but it might point towards where it lies.

Well, from what the "minimum hardware resources" are needed to run the basic windoze OS, you might get way better performance running XP.
One of the big micro$sft turnoffs for me is the way they keep needing more & more hardware just to run a system.
Might want to consider installing a dual boot XP - 7 on the thing & do some comparative test runs to see which gives a faster run.

To be fair Windows 7 is much better than Vista so they have made some strides in usability and performance. Of course I would personally use XP over either of one off those two myself. I am also the same person that refuses to let KDE 3 go so take my opinion with a grain of salt.

The problem with XP is that it only recognizes approx. 3 GB of RAM. My new box will have 8 GB's... Not to mention, the newer hardware has some problems with drivers for XP on the motherboard.

Just so you know, Windows 7 Professional and Windows 7 Ultimate have what is called : Windows XP mode, which allows you to run software in 32 bit mode.

The reason I got Ultimate was I got a pretty decent price... So it was worth it to me. I have played with Windows 7 Home Premium, and quite frankly... I was IMPRESSED. I was even able to partition my hard drive with nary any data loss, and I set up to extended drives in under 10 minutes total. Pretty impressive. I truly think that Microsoft FINALLY got it right with Win 7... other than I think they could lower the prices, somewhat, but all in all... an IMPRESSIVE OS...

While XP mode is neat you can do the same thing with Virtual Box or VMWare the only difference is that with Pro and up the license is included.

You know me... I want to be legal...

The advantage of using the XP mode in Win 7 is that it is totally integrated into the OS with no extra layers of virtual pc problems.
