Sound stopped working...
Mon Jan 24, 2011 6:34 pm
OK, I broke my sound output, not sure when it happened but I suspect that the installation of a sound/video related program (or update) might've done it.
The system notifications (bells & whistles) are working OK so I know my speaker system isn't at fault.
Trouble is that I don't recall exactly when it croaked on me - MP3 files, youtube, DVDs etc have no sound output.
I'm running XINE as a backend.
I stuck in a sound card (Aureal/Vortex) but same stuff.
Any suggestions?

Running (kubuntu) Lucid on a custom box w/Chaintexh VNF 4/VNF 4 Ultra mobo,
(*not* running 64 bit versions of anything)
nVidia chipset controllers: audio controller nVidia CK804 AC'97 (rev a2) - Subsystem: Chaintech Device f647
AMD 64 2GHZ, 2GB ram, 3 - 1TB HDs
dual monitor nVidia 7600 GS video is the only add-in card
the puppy has been amazingly well behaved - up 'till now.

easy fix...
Tue Jan 25, 2011 7:04 pm
*whew* That one turned out to be an easy fix; pulled up "settings" from the sound mixer in the menu bar, unmuted & maximized everything & sound magically appeared.
When I tried to eliminate selections & narrow things down, the sound went off so I guess this poor confoozed box likes to have all the settings enabled.
There are still *some* programs, like Amarok, that aren't playing nice but I can deal with that.
Now to test out flash player, etc etc etc.
Tanx for the suggestions!
