bare bones distro running TDE

Post  jpisini on Fri Feb 04, 2011 4:54 pm

If anyone is interested I have created a very bare bones Ubuntu 10.04 based Trinity distro. Nothing fancy, it has Trinity KDE (TDE) 3.5.11, has OpenOffice and Firefox as a browser. I have auto login working on the Live DVD I had to use GDM to achieve that so after install if you don’t like gdm and its brown color just type sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm and chose kdm to better match the system. The link is http://dl.dropbox.com/u/12360903/TL3565.iso download size is 1.3gb I am using this now on almost all my systems as a base and then adding what I want from there. The md5sum is 179ac3c8e7a315772e1cc45606d71977 if you do download it let me know what you think.

Ray if you don't like me posting this here it is OK to remove it or to ask me to I don't want to step on your toes.

I have a new one I am uploading now I will post the link tonight after the upload finishes the md5sum is 20070a5eb26e8ccfddf2e99f6045bf9c trinity.iso
I think I got the rough edges off of it. This one has KDM as the default because of using KDM it doesn’t auto login but the login works the user is trinity no password. If you want to change the password open a console and type ‘sudo su ‘this will give you full root privileges you can then type ‘passwd trinity’ and set it to whatever you would like. It continues to use the standard ubiquity installer you can run it from a console or ‘alt + f2’ then run it from there. I am pretty sure I fixed the few remaining issues. I also created icons on the desktop like under the Squeeze version of Trinity; it now has links to My Computer, Network Places, Printers, Firefox, and Konqueror. I hope you guys like it.

Small goof I included Firefox but didn't install Flash or Java I plan on redoing the ISO but a fix in the meantime is:

Open a console: alt+f2 konsole

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install flashplugin-nonfree

sudo apt-get install sun-java6-plugin

JP

Live runs well.

But giv me the command to start the installer.
I don't find the install launcher on the desktop.
I plan to install it on a Root partition.

No custom theme yet, which is cool. Once I can get linux to see my network, I will give it a shot.

I actually really like KDE's default theme. I did tweak the look slightly for the next version but only very minor. I should have that one done by the end of the day it will include an installer in the menu plus a few minor tweaks.

Final ISO to give people something to play with for the long weekend. I fixed a few small things. I added icons for ubiquity and Jockey so you can install easier and add hardware drivers. I took out OpenOffice and installed LibreOffice instead. I tweaked the mouse cursor theme and the window border not a huge change if I have a few minutes I will post a new screenshot. I added a few utilities I use daily at work like putty and secpanel, I also added WinSCP ( yes I know it’s a Window’s program but there is nothing half as good for Linux ( my opinion don’t yell at me ).
The md5sum is 4131efeb2a24458ca1c2c65fd6f5ec99 trinityv21.iso and a download link is available at http://dl.dropbox.com/u/12360903/trinityv21.iso
Enjoy the long weekend I have plans tonight so won’t be online till late if at all.

I noticed a bug Thunderbird adds itself to the menu with the following command kgtk2-wrapper thunderbird %u this doesn’t work so right click on the menu and choose Menu Editor find Thunderbird under Internet and remove kgtk2-wrapper and hit the save button now Thunderbird will launch. You can also just run it from the run line or alt+f2 just by typing thunderbird and hitting enter.
Firefox also added itself this way I caught that one but didn’t realize they would be the same.

trinity21 downloaded at 500 Kb/s steady.
At disk startup , at BOOT: prompt , [Enter].
At boot optiions sreen, selet any of the four top options all load the Live desktop.
To install , run command " ubiquity "
Ubiquity installer is stgraightforward.
Loads in low graphics , no NVidia drivers.

My desktop I set with task bar at top to reduce amount of up and down movement of cursor..

https://dl.dropbox.com/u/6501752/trinity21.jpg

I like the Trinity desktop environment , after months poking around with KDE 4.x plasmoids.
The LibreOffice is a well-endowed office suite.
I am not familiar with Adept. Very few applications availabe yet on repositories.
