[Network] Cisco Valet Connector help needed

Post  LinuXFroG on Wed Feb 09, 2011 3:57 pm

The Valet connector is the only way to use the net at our house now. I need someone to help me figure this out. I have even tried calling Cisco support for this and all I got from them is to be told that I need to either install Windows or buy a Mac. Screw that! I am sure, at least I hope someone here can help me.

I posted this at another site, but still no real help. I was told to install certain things via synaptic, but I can't use synaptic without the net. Hopefully someone here will have a real fix for this.

This is the product I need help with:

I will have to confirm this when I get home, but I am pretty sure that I have the Linksys WUSB100 RangePlus Adapter and it works with Linux, right out of the box.

http://homestore.cisco.com/en-us/adapters/linksys-wusb100-Range-Plus-Wirelessn_stcVVproductId53934622VVcatId552009VVviewprod.htm

Wireless can still be a pain sometimes... I'll get back to you later.

Harvey

PS... WELCOME BACK, long time no see Cool Cool Cool

yikes!

Post  Bob3 on Wed Feb 09, 2011 5:11 pm

Is there any way for you to go with a wired connection to download the needed/necessary apps?

*some* of those USB adapters can be a real bugger getting to work on Linux; I have a box of the critters that were bought on sale that proved to be too big of a challenge so wound up in the "swap meet" crate.

When all else fails we break out an ancient wrt54g that's been flashed with DDWRT/White Russian, they hook up to anything when plugged in.

Thanx Harvey am having a real issue here and I don't want to go back to Winblows. It's good to be back. I got placed on out-patient status the other day.

Bob3, there is no way for me to do that, we are wireless only now. Got a great deal on it, but it is turning out to be the worst idea we have ever made......

ebay?

Post  Bob3 on Wed Feb 09, 2011 6:18 pm

You may want to hit ebay & plug in "linksys DD-WRT" & see what you can come up with; it'll pretty much give you a (sometimes) old wireless router that ya plug into your computer & it will connect with dang near anything wireless downstream (or within a couple miles, if your antenna is hefty enough).
You may have to shell out another $20 - $30 but one of those "magic blue boxes" should be in everybody's tool kit, even if ya don't want to get into industrial grade hacking. Twisted Evil

Otherwise I have a handful of those USB adapters, don't know what will connect or not out of the box w/o tweaking but such a deal I have for you... Rolling Eyes

What OS are ya using, and what's your router??

I was wrong about the model of my Linksys adapter:

http://homestore.cisco.com/searchresults.htm?keywords=wusb54gc

It was a wusb54gc which if you go to the link above, they have a refurbished one for sale for $16.99... It works with Ubuntu, and I am sure that it would work with any other distro based off of Ubuntu, such as PhoenixOS, and Linux Mint.

Which one would you like to try (first)? The "DWL-G132"?

Email me your mailing addy & I'll get it on its way, if it doesn't do the trick we can start going through the PCI cards 'till the eagle screams. Twisted Evil

Thank you guys. You all totally rock. Addy sent Bob3. Again, I can't express my appreciation enough. Thank you.

Edit:
Couldn't spell "enough" right. Wife pointed it out to me.

Edit2:
Doing a search for the DWL-G132, it seems like others have issues with it and Ubuntu derivatives also.

Edit3:
Did find a couple tutorials using ndiswrapper, that might work for it.

Ok, got it about 2 hrs ago. Been trying ever since to get it working. Tried on PhoenixOS, Klikit, Mint, Fedora and Slack. No go. It didn't even work for Win7 and m$ says every thing "Just Works", my backside. Laughing

But at least we tried and I do appreciate it Bob3.

Edit:
Just tried on Oz Unity, but same results. No go.

Is this for a laptop or desktop?

If laptop, does it have a pcmcia slot?

I have a lot more wireless network adapters laying around here... I just grabbed what appeared to be the best USB version from the first box I opened up, & that was 'cuz you already have a USB adapter.
I probably have just a couple-few USB gadgets (and PCI slot versions) but with pcmcia I'm flush.

Dang, I have the tail end of a pallet load of some cute little small form factor desktops that have a PCMCIA slot in them.

Back in the old Lindows daze, the OS would frequently think they were a laptop. Rolling Eyes

If worse come to worse you'll wake up one morning with one sitting by yer front door with a Cisco Airolink plugged into it! Twisted Evil

How about the following:

ViewSonic WPCI-100
AirLink AWLH3025
US Robotics USR5416

If ya want, I can send 'em all along with a postage-paid return label so you can send back whatever doesn't do the trick for ya. What a Face
