Notebook sata drive needed!
Sat Mar 05, 2011 4:54 pm
Hi,
Does anyone have a sata notebook hd 60 gig or higher that they can donate to me? The laptop hd I usually use for making the PhoenixOS isos bit the dust. I usually pull my main drive out, pop in the PhoenixOS extra hd, then use that to make the isos, then when I am done put my main drive back in with no loss of data; since it was never used during the iso creations.
Thanks
Ray

Look at Geeks.com and see if you can find one that you can use. Let me know the part number.

what speed?
Sun Mar 06, 2011 11:41 pm
What's the speed on yer preferred HD, 5400 or can a 7200 rpm go rock & rolling in yer little laptop??
We're pretty scant on SATA HDs, especially 2.5".
Got tons of IDE. Heck we just had to "upgrade" our power supply testers to 24 pin w/sata, a very traumatic experience!

This is what I'm talking about. A site that is actually a family. People who take care of each other. I'm glad to be a part of this site. Thank you to everyone here.

Yup it sure is! When I first started on PhoenixOS, I had hoped to recreate the Linspire/Lindows look and feel as well as the wonderful family support we become accustomed to in the Linspire/Freespire forums. I am very grateful to all the support I have received from you the community and hope this community continues to grow and I am very proud to be a part of this family! I thank all of you for helping me make this possible.
This next release is a big one so stay tuned, drive scheduled to be delivered tomorrow!

got another test machine...
Fri Mar 18, 2011 12:03 am
I have another test machine, been having problems with the big old desktop so went & picked up a nice little Lenovo desktop with an AMD Athalon X2, 3.1 GHZ, 3GB DDR3 ram.
Plugged the old hard drive in & zoom!
(all for less $$ than a 5 - 6 year old Pentium D machine would run - last day of the sale )
Needs a new dual head video card though, old one got fried when the PS went out.
I'm not sure if Skype is working or not though, gotta eyeball it some more.
Anyway, is the new release going to play nice with a dual-boot with Win 7 or is the HD better off getting wiped?

You are always better off wiping Windows :-)
That said the base of Phoenix is Lucid so dual booting should not be a problem.

I hear ya there, the poor sales guy at the store seemed to have his "Linux filter" plugged into his ears; kept trying to peddle a beefier machine, talking about upcoming windoze programming needing more cpu cores & ram, virus protection, blah blah blah ...jpisini wrote:You are always better off wiping Windows

LOL
Actually... I am kinda liking Win 7 Pro and Ultimate.
MS finally got it somewhat right. I have had nary any problems with it, and some of the software that I use is Windows or Mac only
I am looking forward to Ray's new release, though

Win 7

You are right hq MS finally got it together. I use Win 7, Klikit, pardus, Ubuntu UI 2.8, and Frag's OS. I think Ubuntu's new just out UI 2.9 gives you a choice of several desktops.

I disagree the file management in 7 is awful a huge step back from 95 through XP reminds me of the Windows for Workgroups days. Some can argue stability but my XP never crashed (neither do my Linux boxes) I always performed maintenance and applied patches. Don't get me started on Security http://www.petur.eu/blog/?p=361 they just released a new version of IE and didn't bother to fix the known issues I hate to think what else they left open. Now some can argue with me but I do have a Windows workstation at work so I use Win7 5 days a week ( to putty on to my Linux boxes :-) ). I'm not at all impressed is it better than Vista yeah but that is not saying much.

Now to be fair the Linux pickings lately aren't all that hot either.(PhoenixOS excluded it rocks.) What the heck is up with Gnome 3? Did they say "Hey the KDE guys hate their new version we should do it too". Speaking of KDE if they move the freaking settings around any more we will have to start calling them Windows2. Pick a location for a setting and leave it be gosh darn it.
LXDE has potential but needs a bit more time to mature before it is ready for prime time.
XFCE is now known as Gnome lite and the sad part it is no longer truly portable so how they think to grow is beyond me. Did I leave anyone out?
OS X bah a half baked OS that takes the best parts of BSD and hides them from the user why should I have to hack my OS to use it from a terminal?
Haiku it had potential then they went nuts and decided to release original and extra crispy library versions that may or may not run the few programs that are out there what were they thinking?
OK I'm done.

Wow John....
How do you really feel???
I have not had any problems with Win 7... Of course I don't use it as much as I use XP Pro and PhoenixOS...But it definitely out shines Vista, and in some ways, I like it better than XP. I use a Bible study program that is called Logos... http://www.logos.com/comparison It is Windows and Mac only... not to mention all the other Windows software titles that I have and use... I wish Linux could run ALL the software that I have purchased, but alas, it is not to be so...
What have you discovered in the filing system in Win 7 that you don't like??? I use PowerDesk as my "explorer" and I haven't come across any major differences??? Just curious... and as for security... I use Norton 360 and Webroot Internet Security Essentials which keeps the nasties at bay... (worth the monetary investment, in my opinion).

See you use a third party product for file management if it was any good you wouldn't need that. Plus you are using two separate programs just to surf the web how crazy is that. I do have to agree that it is still needed there are several programs that I use on a daily basis ( for work ) that do not run in Wine I could run them in a virtual machine but I would still need a license so it doesn't really solve anything.
I think I need a new hobby. I started out in computers as a hobby and have been working in the industry for about 15 years yet I still do it on the side. I am starting to get grumpy at the way people do things. Maybe I'll take up golf.
