Just another issue Empty Just another issue

Mon Mar 28, 2011 5:02 pm
Well, I hate to say this, but I am going to have to take a powder. My pc took a royal dump on me, juice was spilled/dumped inside by my grandson and it is not fixable. Unless I rebuild it, but it isn't really worth the price. Cost more to rebuild then to just get another I fear. Plus, I'm not much of a builder. I can do basic things, but that's about it.

So, it's been fun and will pop in from time to time, from the library or my daughter's laptop. Thanx for everyone's help. I will miss everyone.

Bummer Dude~
I have some ancient Itronix laptops here, they're virtually kid-proof.
I first saw them many moons ago at an electronics show in Las Vegas; they had one set up in an aquarium with a bilge pump blasting water over the keyboard.
Of course I just *had* to reach in & start punching buttons to make sure they weren't pulling a fast one.
They were only $6k back then, nowdaze ya can't give 'em away.

How are your windoze 95 skills? What a Face

Few had USB ports, those came along later with win 98.
No optical drives either, if you wanted to load anything a CF card in a PCMCIA adapter was the easiest, outside of a parallel optical drive, but then there was still that driver issue.

I've heard that DSL was managed to be loaded on some but the minuscule amount of ram (which is too proprietary) kept anything heftier from being used.
That & the spiffy touch screens don't seem to have a viable linux driver available.

Well, I haven't played with Win95 in ages and my only way to get on the net is via a USB wifi device. So I think 1 of those wouldn't be usable for me. I appreciate the offer though.

You can purchase a cheap rebuilt from Geeks.com. This is where I purchase computers for my semi-adopted kids. And, if you can't pay 120-150 dollars at once, they have a payment plan via Bill-me-later. The computer I'm typing on currently is a Dell Optiplex 745 Pentium D 925 3.0GHz 2 GB ram with CDRW/DVD which cost $145.00. Purchased the extended warranty for it (3 year) for an additional $39.00. Great deals but they don't stay in stock long. You have to check the site every few days to catch the best deals. Have purchased about 6 systems from them in the past 2 years and now problems yet.

I wished I could jump on any deal right now. But am financially embarrassed at the moment. I still will have to wait till my settlement comes in.

I have a Intel D845GLC mother board I would part with for $10.00 plus shipping. I also have a power supply I would sell for $5.00 plus shipping. The mother board has built in LAN,Video,Sound and of course USB ports.
These prices are for Froggy only.

I was thinking of putting it on ebay so I referbed it I changed 5 caps that go bad after about 6 or 7 years 3300mf@6.3volt. I also put in a new battery. I have not been able to find a layout of the pinout yet I found one close, meaning power, reset, power LED and hard drive LED.
I could send them to Ray and maybe he could find a cabinet.
Froggy do you have a mouse and keyboard? I have a lot of mice I could throw one in. Some how I ended up with about 8 or 10 of them.
Was your other computer a laptop? If it was you will need a hard drive or an adapter to change the laptop hard drive to a pata plug. They sell those on ebay or Ray might have one.
I also have a new COA and serial number for winxp that I never used.

I still have my mouse and keyboard. As for re-building it myself, my eyes aren't good enough anymore. I also no longer have a work table and these old bones don't get around like they used to.

Sounds good to me: send items to me and I will assemble him a unit and heck preload latest phoenixoS on it, if he likes; that way I can test the wifi with it before sending it to him. I'll donate what I can, and what I don't have we can do a campaign here in forums like Dr. C said for remaining items.

LinuxFrog we will have you back up and running! Everyone lets help him!

I wonder how critical a waterproof keyboard is? Cool

Maybe some duct tape over the optical drive to make sure no PB & J sandwiches wind up in it... Twisted Evil

Maybe we could just dip the whole computer in wax to make it grandson proof. Twisted Evil

This Intel mother board does not have a AGP socket. It does have built in video. If you wanted something better it would have to be a PCI video card.

I gave my address to Dr C and Old tech. As soon as the stuff arrives will start building and with the support of our members hopefully have you up and running soon. Reminds me of the good ole days in the Lindows/Linspire/Freespire forums, we were like one big family: a lot like we are now. I am going to miss Bob, maybe he be back every once in a while.

I really appreciate what my family here is doing for me. I agree, Bob is a good person. Hopefully he will just stop in just to say hello. Just because we don't run the same OS, doesn't mean we have to disassociate ourselves from each other. This IS a family here.

On the way Ray. Sent CDRW/DVD player, 2 Video cards, both PCI (1-128MB and 1-256MB), and internal phone modem 56K (which I think I purchase from you a few years ago). Thanks, Brian

I'll email you the tracking number.
