Current OS??? Empty Current OS???

Sat Feb 06, 2010 12:00 pm
I thought (I know, I know--- that's dangerous and weakens the team Wink ) that it might be interesting to list OS's that we currently use, at least while we are waiting for Ray's release on Valentine's Day.

OK... I'll go first --- in order of use:

1: Windows XP Pro Shocked
2: Mepis 8.something
3. Ubuntu 9.10
4. Fedora 11 (Gnome Version)
5. Fedora 12 (KDE Version)

I also have Klik-It, SuSe, PCLinuxOS, and a couple of more on my rack system, but I haven't fired them up in month's.

I plan on installing PhoenixOS on my rack system when it becomes available...

I have PhoenixOS (Hardy) with win4lin installed, running windows xp sp3. However; I have one program that there is no Linux equivalent of: Xara Webstyle then I have to use win4lin and load windows xp; but surpisingly it runs faster in PhoenixOS under win4lin xp emulation than it does an a TRUE XP machine! I would like to see win4lin add Windows 7.

Current OS??? Empty OS Preferences

Sun Feb 07, 2010 8:18 am
PhoenixOS (hardy) is my top choice. I would use it exclusively but for things like TurboTax, when I run WinXP Pro. I have a dual boot setup and hate to have to reboot into Windows, not just because it's Windoze, but the boot process alone is so much slower. Ray, do you know if TurboTax would run on Win4Lin? I tried getting VirtualBox going but gave up after I kept running into dead ends.

........I have XP Pro on a laptop (for special programs eg: Dragon Naturally Speaking for a client, ATT dsl hookups, etc...)...

On my Linux (Toshiba) laptop I'm running PCLOS 2009.4 LXDE..

I have no internet access at home (I live in a rural area) but have these distros on various machines for testing or loaning : {not in any particular order...)

PCLOS 2009.2(Has large SYNAPTIC update to now....A 2010 KDE4.xx version from TEX -any day soon!)
PCLOS GNOME 2009.3*= 2010.x (http://linuxgator.org/PCLinuxOS/iso/ -my favorite & more refined than Fedora Gnome -IMO...)
PCLOS-LXDE (nice for older stuff like p3's w/ 256 mb ram...!)
Vector 6 (repos are slo to keep up, newer version has a pispoor installer...)
Dreamlinux 3.5 (Mac version...extinct...?)
Klikit -0.1.08b (Well,newer versions got to be too much...)
MEPIS 8.0.12 32bit( Debian based, bloated, doesnt work on everything, still has a few minor "BUGS", but not bad...)

...If I have to, I can bring any machine to a friends house 25 miles away for updating/downloading etc on his HIGH SPEED connection...I use my LINUX laptop for hooking up with the local wi-fi spots to talk to you hombres...

I am awaiting this PHOENIX distro for an AMD athlon k7 machine, that LINSPIRE worked perfectly...

Harv's Rack system is a very good idea for those who do not have acess to multiple machines...I help seniors with their computer needs ( which is basic) and come across extra towers from time to time...

Yes it does, I have tried it a few times. Best part its only 29.99 for win4lin ubuntu version, which is the version you have to get for PhoenixOS (Hardy).

Great to see you ! How you been?

Only complaint is the below 20 degree temps we've been having here. Thanks for the Win4Lin info Ray, glad I waited and got your tip. Just finished the iso download a coupla minutes ago.

I'm currently running Windows 7 64-bit and 32-bit Professional and Home editions, Ubuntu 9.10 64-bit, and Opensuse 11.2 64-bit. Not too thrilled with the latest Ubuntu as the keyboard mapping is a little messed up with the USA layout. Pressing the asterisk key produces the quotation mark, and pressing the quotation mark key produces the asterisk. This error seems to have carried over into LinuxMint 8 and other Ubuntu 9.10 derivatives.

1. Mepis 8.0.12 with XP Pro in Virtualbox Laptop and Desktop
2. Debian Lenny with XP Pro in Virtualbox Desktop, use to duel boot with other Linux OS's.
3. XP Pro Desktop (vary rarely go on the internet with it)

Waiting for PhoenixOS Stealth (Debian).

Do most everything for Windows in Virtualbox, the XP Pro Desktop is mainly a server with all our photos on it but slowly moving them over to NAS units.

Well, I am running
1> Win 7 on one laptop
2> Win XP on another
3> Linspire 6.0.17

XP is on my laptop I take to a friends to game with, Win 7 as an upgrade from Vista. Need it on that one. Linspire is my wander on the web and e-mail. I haven't yet, but am about to test it on one of those Acer Aspire one netbooks to see if the wireless will work. Haven't found anything like an updated Linspire to me! Laughing JohnP

I'm running Windows 7RC and Linux Mint 8 on my HP Pavilion desktop. I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 UNR on my Dell Mini 9 netbook. I'm running in 32 bit mode on all machines.

Looking forward to the desktop version of Phoenix OS, but Ray can take all the time he needs as far as I'm concerned. Wink

Hi RevJack,

I noticed this just now [Friday, February 19 2010] and have been looking for a solution. It's quite complex but I think that what you need is found in xmodmap.

xmodmap - utility for modifying keymaps and pointer button mappings in X
Description

The xmodmap program is used to edit and display the keyboard modifier map and keymap table that are used by client applications to convert event keycodes into keysyms. It is usually run from the user's session startup script to configure the keyboard according to personal tastes.

For example
Code:
xmodmap -pk
will display your current keyboard mapping. Or more usefully,
Code:
xmodmap -pke
will output the same data in a form that can be fed back to xmodmap.

To exchange those two keys you would have to find asterisk and quote-mark in the output and change them with xmodmap.

Code:
paul@paul-ArtistX07:/usr/share/X11/xkb/rules$ xmodmap -pke | grep asterisk
keycode  17 = 8 asterisk 8 asterisk 8 asterisk

paul@paul-ArtistX07:/usr/share/X11/xkb/rules$ xmodmap -pke | grep quote
keycode  48 = apostrophe quotedbl apostrophe quotedbl apostrophe quotedbl

You can also get the required information by running xev [evaluate an X event], but this is very verbose!
Code:
xev
[snip]
KeyPress event, serial 29, synthetic NO, window 0x6800001,
    root 0xfb, subw 0x0, time 1075989279, (550,726), root:(554,775),
    state 0x10, keycode 50 (keysym 0xffe1, Shift_L), same_screen YES,
    XLookupString gives 0 bytes:
    XmbLookupString gives 0 bytes:
    XFilterEvent returns: False

KeyPress event, serial 32, synthetic NO, window 0x6800001,
    root 0xfb, subw 0x0, time 1075990191, (550,726), root:(554,775),
    state 0x11, keycode 17 (keysym 0x2a, asterisk), same_screen YES,
    XLookupString gives 1 bytes: (2a) "*"
    XmbLookupString gives 1 bytes: (2a) "*"
    XFilterEvent returns: False
[snip]

Here are a couple of scripts, as examples of how to use this : --

Some keyboards do not automatically generate less than and greater than characters when the comma and period keys are shifted. This can be remedied with xmodmap by resetting the bindings for the comma and period with the following scripts:

!
! make shift-, be < and shift-. be >
!
keysym comma = comma less
keysym period = period greater

One of the more irritating differences between keyboards is the location of the Control and Shift Lock keys. A common use of xmodmap is to swap these two keys as follows:

!
! Swap Caps_Lock and Control_L
!
remove Lock = Caps_Lock
remove Control = Control_L
keysym Control_L = Caps_Lock
keysym Caps_Lock = Control_L
add Lock = Caps_Lock
add Control = Control_L

I would think that trying this in a LiveCD session to start with might be the way to go!

Man Im touched PhoenixOS made it on some of these lists, thats awesome!

I myself used to have this:

Linspire 7 (Later became PhoenixOS: Flamehawk Hardy)
Windows XP SP3
Linspire 5.0

Then later became this:

PhoenixOS Flamehawk Intrepid
Windows XP SP3 using win4lin

Then now is:

PhoenixOS:Karmic and no bloody windows of any kind, the New crossover office 9 works so good dont even need windows anymore; I was really impressed in the BIG difference: Way to go Codeweavers!

Current OS??? Empty Re: Current OS???

Fri Jun 11, 2010 2:10 am
In the past:-

DOS, RiscOS, Linspire 5 and 6 and investigated Debian 4 and Slackware. In the work place I have used the original Apple and Windows.

Current:-

Phoenix (Hardy, Karmic, Lucid). Hardy is my main at present because the situation is fluid at present.
Debian 5
Debian 6 (rolling and with KDE4)
Mempis 8.5 - I use Mepis to repair/update grub, partitions and such but I don't like it as much as 8.0.

Because I like a tidy and sparse desktops, I like KDE4. I now have found my way around it, but a little surprised that files on desktop do not appear but are filed in a folder called desktop. It will make me more methodical and download into download folder. Those who like their applications buttons on the desktop still can. I prefer my main ones on the panel up to now, but I may just use favourites in the menu.

I don't know if any of you have tried Kanotix before, but there is finally a new 2010 version available. I have used Kanotix back in 2004 and thought it was a pretty good distro.

Here are some of the particulars:

http://kanotix.com/changelang-eng.html
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear Kanotix community!
Just in time for LinuxTag 2010 are updated Kanotix Excalibur versions available.
All based on Debian 5.0 (Lenny) with all the latest security updates and many extras. In short they contain
* Kernel 2.6.32-ck2 (BFS powered)
* KDE 3.5.10
* OpenOffice 3.2.1 (from http://www.openoffice.org/)
* Grub2 (1.97 beta 4)
* Wicd 1.6.2.2
* Pidgin 2.7.1
* ntfs-3g 2010.5.22
* Wine 1.2-rc2
* Iceweasel 3.0.6 (xulrunner 1.9.0.19)
* Icedove 2.0.0.24
* Kanos scripts for installing Nvidia or ATI graphics driver, as well as Flash-Player-Plugin - more infos here
...and many more...
The updated Kanotix Excalibur 2010 iso images are available here
Kanotix Excalibur 2010 32 bit - ISO (844 MB) | MD5
Kanotix Excalibur 2010 64 bit - ISO (907 MB) | MD5
Kanotix Excalibur 2010 2in1 (32+64 bit) - ISO (1.7 GB) | MD5
Additionally there are Kanotix Excalibur 2010 KDE4 (KDE SC 4.3.2) versions available. The KDE4 Versions are without Kanotix branding.
Kanotix Excalibur 2010 KDE4 32 bit - ISO (923 MB) | MD5
Kanotix Excalibur 2010 KDE4 64 bit - ISO (1.0 GB) | MD5
Kanotix Excalibur 2010 KDE4 2in1 (32+64 bit) - ISO (1.9 GB) | MD5
If you just want to try all flavours use the 4in1 iso image
Kanotix Excalibur 2010 4in1 (KDE3 32+64bit & KDE4 32+64bit) - ISO (3.6 GB) | MD5
This are hybrid-iso-images which can be written on dvd or onto an usb-stick.
creating a bootable usb-medium
Hint for KDE 3.5 version:
To access hd partitions in live mode execute:
kdesu konqueror media:/
and press on refresh button
