Installation Problem Empty Installation Problem

Sat Mar 13, 2010 4:56 pm
I downloaded, burned, and tried to install the new release on my laptop. It gets to the screen where I choose what to do. If I press "enter" to run the live mode, it eventually gets to a screen that looks like several small screens, repeated several times. It appears to have a mouse cursor below it. If I move the mouse and keep clicking. it acts as though it selects something. Then the screen goes black and stays that way for good.

That doesn't sound too hopeful. Laptops are a bit more difficult than desktops often with their special hardware.

Have you tried in 'Save Mode' which offers a reduced screen driver that is more likely to work with some screens?

What is the make, model and specifications of the laptop?
CPU, RAM, video card ...

What other distros have you tried on it?

Hadn't really heard about Gambas but have taken a look and is sounds an interesting language. Too much for me to try and learn a language now though.

Hope it worked ok for you. My testing consisted of placing the iso and zsync in the same folder, putting the iso in one folder the zsync in another and the resultant iso in a third, the actual iso I also tried in multiple locations. I repeated the exercises using the raccomputers url as would be the normal situation, all of the combinations I tried worked out ok.

It seemed to work but left me with a Konsole window that wouldn't stop working. After I shut the window down and looked for the file it wasn't there. I'll have another go and see what happens.

The konsole process was left open so that the user could see the actual results. The close (x) key just shuts the window down. The iso should be in the Directory for the final iso at item 1, at least in all my tests that's where it finished up and that's what was intended as you might have guessed Very Happy. After returning from the konsole window the Cancel button exits the process.

Try out the mini version; I find that works very well with laptops that desktop version doesnt.

Hello Ray,

I tried again with your Zsync.comdr with some success and a couple of problems.

1) I found that clicking on the 'OK' button did not work obviously and it was only when I closed that window that the other Konsole window appeared or was visible. No feed-back in the GUI apparently.

2) The working files are being created in a temp folder. I ran out of space on my hard drive as these had used up all available space. I was using an external USB drive with 1 TB of storage at the time and would have preferred that zsync used the current directory there for any temporary files. Can this temporary directory be changed use the target directory?

I downloaded the mini-version, and it did the same thing. I tried both versions on my desktop computer and a Dell laptop, and they both worked fine. So it doesn't seem to be the iso itself.

I have an Acer Aspire 3680 with a dual-boot-Vista Home Basic and Ubuntu. It has a 1.6 GHz Intel Celeron M 520 processor, 1GB of DDR2 memory, 80 GB HD, and an Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950.

Any ideas? I sure would love to switch from Ubuntu to Phoenix.

Thanks!

Paul,

I'm not sure what you mean in item 1. I will change the name of that from OK to Process, perhaps that will make it clearer.

The routine works by using the tabs at items 1, 2 and 3 to select the various folders and files required. Item 4 is just text input of the url, unfortunately I don't have any idea of how to check whether the url entered is actually valid. The routine does NOTHING at this stage, allowing the user to recheck all his inputs. Clicking the OK (Soon to be Process) button causes the konsole window to appear and zsync to perform it's magic. When zsync completes the konsole window remains open so that the user can check the output to make sure that the checksums etc are correct. The user can then close the konsole window either through the Session menu or the Close button and if:

a) the results are correct use the Cancel (soon to be Finish) button to close the routine

b) if the results are incorrect due to spelling etc in the url line the user can correct the line and then activate the OK (Process) button to repeat the exercise. The routine will go through the same motions as previously but including the .part file created by the initial process.

There is obviously a slight delay as the system checks the url file so there could be very little sign of activity unless you check the internet lights, especially if there is nothing to download.

I hope that explains it a little clearer - if enough people are interested in it I will generate a program document and look at some Help details - but it's probably overkill for such a simple routine.
