News! Thump Thump Thump! Empty News! Thump Thump Thump!

Fri Dec 21, 2012 6:54 pm
First let me start off by wishing everyone a Happy Safe Holidays! 2nd let me give you a preview of what is to come.

John and I have been working on a new release for PhoenixOS one will be KDE4 the other will be KDE 3, we also have a debian version in the works.

A big preview, Netflix will be supported in upcoming release. You can now watch Netflix in PhoenixOS!

I been very busy with the store, but I am sending the finals to John soon, to check out and get ready: hopefully a Happy New Year release, in the spirit of Linspire's traditional holiday releases Very Happy

Lastly I'd like to thank all of you for your support!

Ray...

P.S. Special thanks to John P for helping with these releases and Ray for testing and allowing use of his space.

For the Precise Build: I might have to make two versions: one with netflix and one without netflix. John and I are looking into what solutions are available. At this moment your gonna need at least 2 ghz processor and 2 gigs of ram to run netflix and a decent gfx card.

Let me know what you guys think?

I am not sure why you would bother, make the distro with Netflix (whatever that is) and the user can decide whether he uses it or not, just like any other software. Making radical adjustments just wastes time, you cannot cater for everything and everybody, producing multiple distros for our small collective is not warranted imho.

Just look at the bigger distros, they don't produce for niche areas, they make a product that suits most of their users, not the one or two who need specialist programs. There seems to be absolutely no valid reason to delay your distro for one program. I'm sure that the majority will agree.

Any other suggestions: I am thinking a long the lines of what Ray said. While I want to try to keep everyone happy: they can always remove netflix if they dont like it. Heck next release I can even make a script to remove it for them by double clicking it. The Precise Netflix version, works real good: the debian one has a problem with installer so I have to work on that more. I will wait a little longer to see what the rest of the collective saids.

Thanks for your input Ray; I'm glad I am not the only one thinking this way.

I'm not real impressed with netflix the way it is, seems like they made a huge blunder by splitting the online section away from the "basic package".
I'm particularly fond of being able to run the Linux OSs on leaner hardware; the "more & more" hardware requirements of the M$ crap is just one of the significant reasons I left M$ products in the dust all those years ago when I made the switch.
Not to mention we have a small stack of machines here needing OS installs, many of which are topped out at 1GB ram.

To be honest I don't use any rental service. I wait and when things come on TV which I am already paying for I watch them then. Sad I know but why pay for TV and then complain there is nothing on because you have seen everything already.

Personally I use Netflix streaming. Where I live we don't get any TV reception, I refuse to pay for cable or Satelite, so streaming Netflix it is. My wife and I have been jumping through every documentary and show we always wanted to watch but never had.

Honestly, having Netflix built into the desktop is not a must have especially since it is so easy to install for example http://how-to.wikia.com/wiki/How_to_watch_Netflix_%28Watch_Instantly%29_in_Linux

My next big hangup is getting coupons to work with Linux. Sadly I think that is an uphill battle. I've figured out some sites but Walmart remains a total failure.

All that said, if Phoenix will launch with Netflix Preinstalled, a script to install it, or a script to uninstall it I really don't care I will probably use Phoenix.

I have recently upgraded my mac to Ubuntu 12.10 just to give it a shot. Interestingly enough I'm getting used to Unity and even like it a little bit. It is kind of nice to have the super keys working from the get go, as well as just how straight forward everything is. It would be nice if it could be opened up and more customizable like say KDE but I'll make do till I can start testing PhoenixOS some more.

I ran into a slew of issues with the latest releases. unfortunately work is swamped and home is even busier so I just haven't had time to look at it. Probably not for the next couple of weeks either just don't have the free time I used to.

Sorry guys but this is a hobby which means it has to wait.
