Information - Repositaries etc

Post  Deffi on Sun Apr 11, 2010 5:59 am

For Information

I had to reinstall Phoenix- karmic yesterday and after a massive update/upgrade I noticed that the 2 geekconnection.org were not fetched and some index files failed to download. This was the case with the earlier install.

Also when I wanted to edit the sources file I was informed that kate was not installed although it is in the menu (the only editor). As I was in command mode I apt-get installed kate as advised.

I do not know whether these are errors that have crept in at my end or will be addressed with the new download coming shortly

hiding programs

Post  Bob3 on Mon Apr 12, 2010 1:14 pm

Having programs "hiding" - saying they are installed but not showing them in the start menu program list, seemed to be pretty common with 8.xx. Mad

I can't exactly recall what I did to get them to finally show up in the list but it may have been a re-install with a program like Synaptic rather than "Add/Remove Programs" from the start menu.

Guess that may have been a bug in the "Add/Remove Programs" section, eh? Rolling Eyes

I have occcassionaly installed an application on some distro , and the launch menu did not appear in the Menu application list.
Every application installs files usually in a sub forlder of /usr, and there will be one script file that is a launcher
If you find a script file that is worded like the application , you can create a launch icon usually by right clicking on the desk top and filling in the upcoming box the name and "in command' the script file name and preferably its whole path e.g. - ' /usr/bin/photoprint '

NICE tip... Cool Cool Cool

I have also found that if a program doesn't end up in the Menu Application List, you can start it via Console or Terminal. One of my favorite mahjongg games is called Xmahjongg, and I installed it in Ubuntu, but it didn't create a launch icon, so I just open terminal and type in "Xmahjongg", and WAA LAA, it loads.

The mention of games has prompted me to ask, as I am a patience fanatic. My grandparents had a miniature set of playing cards for patience. and I used them when I was very young during WWII. Life of reading, jigsaws, cards and being seen and not heard.

I had Pysol installed on the Spires and have it on the hardy version of Phoenix - it is in CnR and the hardy repository I think. It is not in the Karmic repositories. It is not supported any more and for ubuntu advise is to use the breezy universe repository but that seems to be unavailable.

Any suggestions for an alternative please.
