I am using a CQ61-420US laptop it is an AMD 2.1ghz, 250gb drive and 3gb of RAM. Thorpe has the exact same model which is why I find it so strange. I seem to have issues with anything Debian/Ubuntu based. Debian stuff works except sound and the Ubuntu's seem to be very unstable. I would say it was a hardware problem except Mandriva 2010 is rock solid I booted yesterday and it has been running almost 12 hours without a singe issue. Windows 7 which originally was on here ran fine too now it only runs Mandriva.

Try LinuxFrog suggestion: try installing from USB just for the heck of it. I am at a loss why it works here and not there, its like a thorn in my side! Same laptops, makes no sense.

I am having the same issues... tried downloading twice now, and it has crapped out well before it was done. Once at 518 MB/s and again at 724MB/s.

I will try a third time.

Third time seemed to have worked. I will burn, and run live on my new box...

Father's Day Release - Page 2 Empty Re: Father's Day Release

Sat Jun 12, 2010 12:32 pm
As a follow up...

During boot the splash screen stated that the display will run in low graphics mode, so I clicked on OK... and after boot, the display was perfectly fine... 1920x1200 @ 60 Hz and it detected that it was using the DVI port on my Asus VW266H monitor... VERY NICE...

So far, running Live, this is a QUALITY release... GREAT JOB, Ray...

I intend to install to a 500GB rack later today.

Thanks Ray for making this happen. One question... are you going to keep the Linspire L as your K Menu start applications, etc. icon??? I kinda like it, to be honest... just curious.

I had that same issue as hq on startup. But as hq said, it fixed itself.

Ok, now for some new issues for ya to chaw on. Trying to fix my previous issues, I broke the install. No worries there, I just re-installed the system. Got the low graphics mode thing again, not worries there, I just clicked past it and all was well.

The original issues with the permissions is also back and the ktorrent issue is no longer prevalent. However. I have been defaulted to original theme, all customizations are gone. Not sure what occurred differently in this install.

Still playing via LiveCD...

I have discovered that while the Disk & Filesystem "sees" my RAID 1 set of drives, it doesn't seem to know what they are... It says Unknown Disk for both of them. Not really a huge deal, but I was hoping to be able to drag and drop pictures off of my RAID volumes to my PhoenixOS install... maybe once I install it, maybe I can... will find out later.

Still playing around on LiveCD...

I placed a Mannheim Steamroller CD (Christmas in the Aire) into my other DVD/rw and am now listening to it using Amarok...

This is WAY COOL... I was even able to direct my music directly to my headphones so as not to blast my wife out... LOL Smile lol!

Father's Day Release - Page 2 Empty Re: Father's Day Release

Sat Jun 12, 2010 5:51 pm
I still have not got into the install.I have been down the install options. The first gives the string of a's.the other state they are going into low graphics but never do and freeze on the error messages.

(EE) AIGLX error:dlopen of /usr/lib/dri/nouveeau_vieux_dri so
failed (/usr/lib/dri/nouveau_vieux_dri.so:cannot open shared
object file:No such file or directory)
(EE) AIGLX: reverting to software rendering.

(EE) VESA:Kernel mode setting driver in use, refusing to load
(EE) No devices detected

When I said I had a string of a's I had many black dots in the sign in but when I aborted I ended up with a screen full of a's.

I'm having a day out tomorrow

David.

I still can't figure out the issues with the Lucid build. I have reverted back to the Karmic build. Would also like to get a copy of the Hardy build if it is still available. I have an older HP in the closet that could use it.

Hi all, I have not tried USB as I am not having the issue once it is installed I login while running live and lock up in seconds. It seems to be about the time a green ball appears in the task bar no idea if they are related or not. Now I just got in (my daughters graduation was today and while I was home I was not on the computer we had over 50 people here. My Mandriva has been running 22:33 so it is definitely not the laptop or I should say the laptop is not broken.

There are actually two green balls in the taskbar, one is checking for updates (Adept Notifier) and the other kinda looks like it is a green mini globe and is for network connections, of which I am using wired. I don't know if that will help with your troubleshooting or not.

CONGRATS to your daughter, by the way...

Here is my oem desktop.

https://dl.dropbox.com/u/6501752/PhoenixOS061210.jpg

Minor personal changes.
Move the Panel bar to top , to reduce the amount of mouse cursor movement when multi-tasking.
The two Install icons no longer needed can be deleted by right-clicking.
I removed a few quick launch buttons from the Panel tgo give more room for Task window buttons for multi-tasking.
I added an applet to minimize all running task windows. Also a Terminal launcher.
I added a desdktop link from Konqueror to /media as a quick way to navigate to data anyywhere on the file tree.

Thanks, glad you liked it: a lot of work went into this release and yes the L is staying. The L was part of everaldos icon pack, so its perfectly legal to use.

If you love it live, its even faster when you install; and it runs pretty fast for a live mode!

Father's Day Release - Page 2 Empty Re: Father's Day Release

Mon Jun 14, 2010 3:33 am
I have done a fresh and clean download and burn and checked the md5sum which checks with the sum at www.raccomputers.com/phoenixos061210.iso.md5. I am still not able to sign in to the live install, getting the a of amd repeating until I shutdown. With the direct install option, I get the low graphics notification but can not go further.

Any ideas please.

I get this kind of problem (repeating keystroke), normally get out of it by hitting the backspace key and erasing all the excess characters. I put it down to my Logitech keyboard - serves me right for buying an el cheapo Very Happy

Then that is the Adept Notifier checking for updates that is probably hanging you up... That leads me to believe that it is probably a "wireless" issue of some kind. Can you hook up to an Ethernet cable to see if that "solves" your problem???

Same Board probably

Thanks will try.

David

Edit: I don't believe it. I re-installed the live Phoenix (Lucid) and I pressed the backspace immediately after the a - too quick I thought so I typed amd and it went in. Once in I did a hard install and all is well, except when I went back to Phoenix (Hardy) all frames had disappeared but a reboot corrected that. It is near bedtime now so I will now play with the install tomorrow.

Awesome, I love quick easy fixes!

Welcome aboard; your going to like PhoenixOS (Lucid) its very fast and works great.

I am still waiting for more feedback, but I feel this is one that could make it to release
candidate; now to tackle Tekmates problem; back to the drawing board!

That's possible I never use wired. I will wire it later and see if that makes the difference.

Father's Day Release - Page 2 Empty Re: Father's Day Release

I finally got around to installing this. For some reason I couldn't run the install directly from the dvd, but once I went into Live mode, I was able to install from there.

I had a few issues getting PhoenixOS to recognize my 500GB drive, so I tried LinuxMint 9.0 and had the same problem Question Question Question So I tried another 500GB hard drive... and waa laa... success. I have since trouble shot the other drive, and found that it was indeed defective. I contacted NewEgg, got an RMA # with a FREE shipping label to send the defective drive back, and once they have received it, they are going to send me another replacement hard drive...

How's that for GREAT service??? I love doing business with www.mwave.com , www.newegg.com , and www.tigerdirect.com . They have all been outstanding in their service and speed of fulfilling their orders. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED...

Anyway, I will plan on checking this release out. I will report back.

Harvey

PS... Ray... I LOVE PySol... thanks for including it in your release... now to find xmahjongg, and I will be a happy camper indeed. lol! lol! lol!

Wired didn't make a difference. I tried PCLinuxOS and that worked well enough so I downloaded the latest Mandriva RC and that is working even better than the old stable version.

Father's Day Release - Page 2 Empty Re: Father's Day Release

I still have a big problem that I had with the early release, and I had forgot about. I did report it. All my installations a talk to the outside world except Phoenix lucid - it is not connected to the internet. BUT, the entries in the network section of the system settings are there and correct, the green globe in on the task bar and gives the message eth0 active. Having just the one computer I am wired, and as I said, the installations on the other partitions connect automatically, so it is not a cabling issue. I have tried to enter the numbers in the manual setup but to no avail.

The above means I can not update or download drivers etc. If I try anything more than basic settings, Lucid freezes.

For info, with the live install, on loading the notice about low graphics comes up with error messages. By acknowledging you are presented with 4 options, the last being start x. Choosing this option returns the live installation to normal graphics - there is a delay.
