Removing a locked file on my desktop. Empty Removing a locked file on my desktop.

Wed Jun 02, 2010 2:44 pm
Had a lot of success with my experiments and learning but in the latest I have ended up with a file which I can not remove. It has a padlock. I think the mistake I made was working in root and not in user for HPLIP installation. This is in Debian not Phoenix. I have not tried scanning in Phoenix only printing which works out of the box.

No problem with command line. I am doing most of my work in terminal at present.

How do I remove it, rm does not seem to work. I would prefer not to reinstall.

Thanks in anticipation.

Have you tried typing rm name_of_file as root in that directory?

Yes but I was using path names. I just now tried cd and rm but it failed. I was using the word file generically. I have a locked directory. I notice there are others. I am in Debian 5. I have tried searching the web. I don't quite know why it happened as I was following a routine I have followed before. Well as far as I know, mistakes can creep in. I was tired. I have learnt to install a new kernal, install Nvidia and get rid of the inconsistencies in xorg.conf.

I now have a rolling Debian 6 (testing). I finally found a download Squeeze (the daily), that did not freeze at the first step of choosing a language, though it still had a broken menu page. I now know how to pin.

I am trying to write the things I learn down. I have learnt from you in the past.

Thanks

You can install krusader that has a sudo mode that will allow you to erase it no problem.

Breaking things is a great way to learn I learn more from my mistakes than any book I have ever read.

Thats so true, before PhoenixOS was Born, and it was becoming Linspire 7 I would get a laptop I didn't care about and test on that, one and made mistakes all the time; thats how you learn and discover new things!

Thank you Ray. Everything is back to normal.

My education has been as a scientist engineer. At school I did my engineering at the Ford School in the UK, but I am a Chemist and they were the original scientists (alchemy) and breaking things to find what they are made of and how they tick is the method. It can be dangerous at times but fun. Chemistry is an experiential subject.
