New PhoenixOS BlackHawk Lucid RC1 Empty Rc1

Sat Sep 18, 2010 8:32 pm
Downloaded RC1, password on live is amd. Loaded as a live dvd in my VMWare Workstation 7 very quickly.

1. There does not appear to be an INSTALL link anywhere on the desktop or the menu system - I presume the install is in the first grub boot screen
2. What is the difference between this and Beta 3
3. How long is KDE 3.5 (which I presume this is although I haven't managed to find a reference to the KDE version yet) going to continue
4. Will this version be able to function as a true LTS system with this KDE

If the user is OEM the password will be AMD Then go to startup and change it.
I clicked on don't use a password at start up so I missed that.

ADMIM might want to check that out. ... Remember this is a RC

Yes I realise that this is an RC but the problem has been there since the start of Phoenix and it should be fixed by now.

1. Right click on the desktop pick run command and type kdesu ubiquity: that should fix it. I am having a hard time these days finding testers to submit bug reports so things like this can be avoided.

2. There is a lot of custom patches in hopes that will improve compatiblity as well as some speed enhancements. Along with any updates that have came out since last release.

3. Kde 3.5 will remain supported; and if KDE 4 ever gets simplified and more flexible like kde 3.5 then maybe that get added in future.

4. Yes, should be able to function 100% as a true lts system.

It has been fixed in hardy version, and quite truthfully could have been finished a lot sooner; problem is Im having trouble getting testers and the ones I do find, only test it in live mode. I need testers to actually install it so I can see if their user name and password is retained with root access.

Hardy is Final and Finished. Karmic and Lucid are RC.

I have offered several times to test and never heard anything, testing Hardy was in my opinion counter productive since it should have been abandoned ages ago. I personally would have doubts about the number of Phoenix users who are using Hardy at this juncture and have stated before that multiple versions of Phoenix just interfere with the progress that you could be achieving. However these are my opinions only but hanging around waiting for Final Releases is an exercise in futility a la Klikit and there are many Finals already out there and I need a final to set up my new system so I guess Phoenix will not be it.

I am sorry my friend I can't believe we have the same laptop it locks up within 15 seconds of logging in so it is a no go for me. It is something to do with your patches as I am using the the i386 version of Trinity (patched by me)and it works fine no lockups at all. Been running it over a week while waiting on you.

KDE 3.5 is being worked on by the Trinity group and they have betas out for Squeeze and Maverick so it will be around for a while yet.

According to Thorpe you can continue to upgrade through the life of Lucid. I am unable to run it myself so I don't have any first hand knowledge of this.

Admin I set login manager to login without a password and it did remember it after a reboot. But first I had to change my name from OEM to jack then I was able to do a password less login. I could not find an icon or a place to change my password and/or root password.

minor; startup manager is in settings and system.

Login managers window is a little short and covers the buttons on the bottom. It took me a while to realize it.

I think I see the problem with the missing install icon in PhoenixOS. Ubuntu 10.04 does not have a live CD therefore they don't have an install icon. They start right out with install only.

Ubuntu 10.04.1 is a live CD or install and has a install icon on the desktop.

I sent you a pm on freespire forums with the link but never heard back from you. Hardy is now finished: there will be NO more updates: and quite frankly its now capable of updating itself and 6 users have confirmed that the user bob error is fixed when you hd install it!

You have a good point and its been a thorn in my side for awhile now: trying to keep everyone happy.
Eventually there will be only one version: I had been debating whether or not to say anything because then if something slows me down everyone gets upset. I am a one man team, and only have handful of reliable people that are willing to hd install it to test it good.
Soon there will be another release and it will be kde4; I have found a way to make kde 4 behave and do the things that kde 3 already does so easily. KDE 3 slows me down, because I was at first basing off the trinity project which was very buggy (remember python bug) as a result I'm fixing their bugs, and my bugs, and kubuntu bugs, too time consuming.

If you wish to use another distro, thats your choice: Linux symbolizes freedom of choice; one of the many reasons PhoenixOS was created as I can't stand Microsoft. Now if your willing to help the future of PhoenixOS I could use another reliable member on board. Whatever you choose all is good. Thanks for trying it up to now.

RAY.....They have no right to ridicule you. Its your show, you have something the rest of us don't have. If your doing your best and I think you are screw em.
Its no different any place else. Nobody seems to understand what RC means. It means don't put it on a production machine. It means find some bugs and report them not bitch about them.

New PhoenixOS BlackHawk Lucid RC1 Empty Re: New PhoenixOS BlackHawk Lucid RC1

I am familiar with Kubuntu Lucid and Ubuntu Lucid.
I had trouble again downloading from RAC site. Two attempts , part way through would stop and not resume. Finally on third attempt I got a completge ISO download/
Starting the installer disk , at boot prompt I tried all four ptions to try to getg into direct installer, but each one of them deverted back to Live. The quickest way is just take the default option to load Live , then install from there with the run command ' ubiquity ' .
Install process is standard Kubuntu Lucid. But the entries for User and password and host name are abandoned , and the final install automatically creates the ' oem ' user account.
When my desktop came up , I first ran 'Restricted manager ' but the NVidia settings would not work. Then I did a full update with Update Manager , then went back to the NVidia settings and now they worked. But the menu in ' System settings > Monitor ' would not work. But the menu in ' System > NVidia settings did work , and I was ablt to adjust my Screen resoluton.
The Kubuntu Software Manager works but the normal Kubuntu progress icon wheel does not display, nor is there any progress bar while installing apps.
Inserting a USB thumb drive mounts okay and displays an icon , but it will not unmount, as in Kubuntu.
I have used the new Kubuntu with KDE 4.5 and do NOT recommend it. They need a lot of improvement to make it user friendly.
I found one majr glitch in Black Hawk , I hit the Log out button and I lost all my GUI and could not startx. I re-installed the whole installer disk.

StanTheMan were you using Kubuntu 10.04 or 10.04.1? I just downloaded 10.04.1 just checking it out.

Never mind ..YUCK.. Thats terrible, another coaster. I'm surprised you don't have to reboot for each icon.

OK let me know I am always willing to help. I just don't understand it, Phoenix obviously works for you on that system yet just locks up for me. I would suspect my system but since I had the fan replaced it has been rock solid. I don't usually leave it on during the week but on the weekend I turn it on Friday night after work and don't shut it off till bed time Sunday night so it runs over 50 hours with no problems.
