Kernel Updates and problems

Post  Deffi on Thu Apr 22, 2010 3:20 pm

There have been nearly continuous updates recently and a number of them related to the kernel. For me this explains delays.

The kernels do not have all the modules related to Nvidia particularly the legacy drivers. This has led to the drivers not working in Debian testing and Phoenix (9.10 based) and Ubuntu Karmic. Karmic worked initially for me but after an update nvidia ceased to work. After a the last updates when kernel and nvidia file s were updated I obtained enhanced video. Nvidia recognized my monitor and card but Ubuntu reported that I was not using my vendor driver. when I acted on that I lost the install.

Similar updates were available to Phoenix but did not work. Both in phoenix and Ubuntu the updates failed and with ubuntu neded rebooting twice to get all the updates. No install are marked broken but there are the problems above. Pheonix had to be rebooted when using Adept as with Ubuntu. I used apt-get update and upgrade and all seemed to go to completion, but I was suspicious. I went to synaptic and found 3 files had not installed and 3 had not upgraded. This was better than Ubuntu which left 2 to be installed and 35 out of 48 to be upgraded. I think a bug has been reported to Ubuntu.

Debian stable has the nvidia files now and I will try to install nvidia and modules the debian way.

I will go back to patient waiting, both Phoenixes work and I am having fun with Debian testing with KDE4 which seems stable except the widgets will not stay where they are put even when locked - on reboot.

Trying to find a way round the legacy nvidia driver problem I have, I found a partition on which I first installed Mepis 8.5. All worked well until I installed the nvidia legacy driver, using Mepis assistant. and the install was lost. I dug out my copy of Mepis 8.0 and that worked well and the driver installed and functioned.

Searching the web, I find that Linux 2.6.3* has a bug, so as I thought, it is a problem with latest kernels. It looks if I and others will have to be patient and await the resolution of the bugs.

This would explain a lot. The older flamehawk doesnt have the latest kernel and nvidia and might be why it works great for you. The newer flamehawk I updated is still using hardy but has newest kernel and nvidia.

Let me see what I can do, kinda sucks that users would have to go thru this hassle but I'll see what I can do.

This is also true of the 2 Mepis distributions. Though the numbers are 8.0 and 8.5 the older has kde3 and older kernel whereas the latest has kde4 and the latest kernel. The former works with legacy drivers the latter does not, in my experience. I will go back and search again - there were a range of pages.
