I'm going to keep you busy What a Face

Amarok worked in the last version this time it locks up.
If I may also suggest grab the latest OpenOffice it is only a minor update but may as well have the latest.
I would also recommend dropping the panel to 38 pixels it is as low as you can get with out dropping to the next smaller size pixmaps. Not a huge difference than what you have.

Ok got it, will make note for next iso. Nice catch on documents; forgot to change that to nautilus.
Thanks for the tips Tekmate, and Ray will explore the printer problem.

Live boot time 20secs.
Install to hard drive time 5 mins

I allowed a 30gb drive and 1024mb ram. The response time once again is very good for all the programs that I tried, although my printers are still not correct. I'll post on the other thread about that.

Once I resolve the printer issues I'll do some more testing but it's looking pretty good so far.

Printers are usually a pain to get installed in VM anyways.
Actually Vmware has this problem sorted out pretty well. I run a Win2000 system with Advanced Revelation softwre and a Dosprn program to route the print output from LPT1 to any installed printer and it works like a charm.

My Epson R230 is in actual fact now printing perfectly after I discovered that there were 2 entries in the printer list - one worked, one did not. So we are getting there.

If I could recommend swapping XMMS for Amarok you can get the instructions at http://www.pvv.ntnu.no/~knuta/xmms/ (I have tested this on Lucid and it works just use the Karmic sources)

The scripts for Amarok have been broken for about two years now; you can of course go into the program and add new scripts using the script manager but how many newbies will know to do this. XMMS is simple and easy to use and is smaller as well.

Overall I ran the LiveDVD about an hour last night and with the exception of Amarok locking up I had no issues. I will double check later to see if I can replicate on a fresh boot.

I think I may be falling out of the loop. My machine does not like lucid and its offshoots. I will do a full install but it still is not going on line. All the indicators say differently but reality says no. I noticed that the live install left 'ghost' of the desktop, as I booted up other partitions, which disappeared and did not interfere.

I will PM you Ray.

David

Fruitfull Day ! Another release coming! - Page 2 Empty Re: Fruitfull Day ! Another release coming!

It took me just two tries this time to download this iso. I don't have a clue why I haven't been able to download on the original try. I have not experienced this phenomenon downloading any other distro before. I am not sure if this is a problem on my end, yours, or somewhere between... scratch

I am running the OS live right now. I don't have time to install until I get back home from work.During boot of LiveDVD, it once again stated that is was going to have to run in low graphics mode. I chose run this time only, and OK a couple of times, and once it finished loading, the display was what it should be: 1920x1200 at 60 Hz...

I wish that during the boot sequence that it would turn on Num Lock by default. I know that you can change that via System Settings---> Mouse and Keyboard---> and click Turn On on KDE Startup, but as to one who has numbers included in passwords, it is a pain to type in your password and then discover that the Num Lock key wasn't on... Embarassed Very Happy Nothing major, just a suggestion, that's all.

I have to go for now, but I will try Amarok when I get home tonight to see if I can duplicate John's results.

I like what I see so far, Ray... Thank you for ALL that you are doing. cheers cheers cheers

I can see RAID clearly now...(seems like there was a song about seeing clearly awhile back...Wink Laughing Smile )

@ John: On your suggestion: "1 computer opens in Nautilus but Documents opens in Konqueror it would be better to match them just my own two cents": when I tried opening the documents from the oem header in the left pane, it stayed in Nautilus... I tried both a double click open and a right click open (both in a new tab and a new window), and in each instance it stayed in Nautilus. I couldn't duplicate your finding for some reason.

I have to get to work... more to follow... I'll take the DVD to work and try it on my work computer and run lshw from there. It will be interesting to see if I will be able to see the 3 different networks that I have set up at work.

Actually I meant the desktop Documents icon opens in Konqueror not the documents icon in nautilus sorry about the confusion.

Ahhhhhhhhhhh......... that splains it... Very Happy I can duplicate that one Wink Smile

I am posting this live on my work PC. I was able to "see" my networks, but since I don't want to add this to the domains, I wasn't able to "access" them... this is of course NOT the fault of PhoenixOS... I am EXTREMELY confident that if I added this 'computer" to the authenticated users to access the domains I would be able to do so.

Here is lshw via Konsole:

OK how does one stop Nautilus from opening when I insert a CD? I don’t want it to. I have no problem with it being there but I like Konqueror.

Running via LiveDVD, I held down the Ctrl key when I inserted a Ubuntu CD and it gave me a dialog box asking if I wanted to open it, I chose OK, and it opened in Konqueror right off the bat showing the full contents of the CD.

I hope that helps.

When I get home this afternoon I will try this on my Gateway laptop. I am curious if I will be able to connect to the internet and see my home network via a secured wireless connection. I will test and run lshw for you as well.

Harvey

PS... Why another beta??? Let's test this one for a week or so, fix what we discover, then just go final. I would like to know how you are going to handle the upgrade path of this distro though. I would MUCH prefer to upgrade my OS vs. doing a complete wipe out and an install. I do backup my data, but it would be nice not having to do this each and every time there is an OS update. Just my opinion... I can live with any decision that you decide.

Me personally, was hoping this was the last beta. I like your idea, but add a little more time, give it 2 weeks more testing, fix what the community discovers then go final.

After careful thought and consideration: I have narrowed down the path of upgrade one of two options:

1) Upgrade handled thru custom scripts that way customizations aren't lost and data remains intact.

2) Create a Migration tool, that will assist in backing up email, browser, data in a simplified form, maybe an image then restore after upgrade has been done.

Two or so weeks of testing sounds good to me. We should be able to find things that aren't working "quite right" by then... Wink Smile

And either way that you choose to do upgrades sounds good to me. I agree with John though... the upgrade path needs to be "newbie" friendly either way that you choose, in my opinion.

Thanks Ray, once again, for ALL that you are doing... Cool Cool Cool

Ray,

I tried installing directly from the DVD without going to the Live session, but to no avail. This happened last time as well. For some reason the option of installing the OS directly from the DVD doesn't work. Not a huge deal, but if the option isn't truly available to do, why not modify your boot splash screen and take that option off of the available choices???

I am going to install this on my new box right now. I'll be back later.

Maybe one more beta then go final?

Ray Very Happy

Running live yes my system is working, I have not done a full install yet as I don't know how to make grub2 use nomodeset on every boot and I don't want to have to goof with it at every boot. If someone can tell me that I will install tonight.

Fruitfull Day ! Another release coming! - Page 2 Empty Re: Fruitfull Day ! Another release coming!

Shocked Shocked Shocked STOP THE PRESSES... Shocked Shocked Shocked

I have tried three times to install this latest release.

After the install process I get the following error message:

error: no such device: 95e96618-7c63-4c13-9401-705a31d4d914.
grub rescue> _ (underscore is blinking)

This error message has happened all three times.

After the installer warned me about overwriting Ubuntu 10.04LTS (really your release) I decided to format the hard drive completely. Since PhoenixOS doesn't have Gparted (should be installed by default, in my opinion) I ran Linux Mint Live CD and formatted the entire hard disk to NTFS in the hopes that it might erase whatever was ailing the install... NO JOY...

The DVD runs well in LiveDVD mode, so I can't believe that it is a bad burn. On both instances where I tried to install before formatting to NTFS, I chose to erase the hard disk and install, instead of running side by side the two OS's...

Honestly, I am at a loss here. I will try installing Mint on this drive and see if I can. If I can, then I would say there is something wrong with the installer... Anyone else have this problem???

I am going to take my wife out for dinner now, but I will try the Mint install when I get home.

Hi All,

First off, thanks to those who remembered it is my birthday today [actually my 69th]. And thank you Ray for your nice birthday present!

I am downloading now, using aria2c, and have just over two hours downloading to go. Being my birthday and the family coming for dinner tonight I may not have much time to play around with this until late tonight. Will report back with my experience when I can.

As to upgrade path, I like to have my data on separate partitions as per the scheme described by SilverBear's "Safe and Easy Data Storage Outside the /home".
Safe and Easy Data Storage Outside the /home

My current main OS is ArtistX 0.7 which was based on Ubuntu 8.10 I think, and I have upgraded it to 9.04 without losing any of the functionality or looks of the original. I don't know the ins and outs of this but that seemed like a very good upgrade path. Mind you, with an ISO over 2 GB the upgrade was even larger, so not something you would want to do frequently. In my case I was able to capture the downloaded .deb files and reuse them in several other instances of ArtistX 0.7 so it was worth while for that reason especially.

What is at stake, doing an upgrade, is changing the repositories and updating all the .deb files. When this happens you get to choose whether to keep the existing configuration files or go with the maintainers' configurations. Doing the former seems to keep things much as they were and I have had no problems subsequent to the upgrade at all.

One small request : how about using alternative means of downloading/upgrading the ISO files. A meta-file that can be used with Down-them-all in Firefox or by aria2c in a Konsole window would be nice, as would be a zsync file. I keep hoping ...

Paul

I have a problem, too. I have booted up into a LiveDVD session and am presented with a log-in with user name 'oem' and no password. What should I use for 'user' and 'password'?

Also, the boot-splash image is for Ubuntu, wouldn't it be nicer to have a purpose-made boot-splash image? I've seen some that have the necessary information about boot options right in that image. Better than having to post on the forum for this information.

Paul,

The password is amd it's a long running problem which may or may not get fixed. The solution is posted in one of the threads about it.

Ray

Thanks, Ray.

Well I knew that, didn't I? Sadly my memory lets me down badly most of the time these days. That's one of the main reasons why I use a computer!

I'm running PhoenixOS062310 in LiveDVD session right now and have managed to get it to recognise my location and time-zone. So now I am about to take a look around.
